March 22, 2012 - The Ohio Army Reserves are the official defense forces of the State of Ohio and serve under the command of the Adjutant General's Joint Forces Command, with the Governor as Commander-in-Chief. OHMR has a place for men and women, ex-servicemen and ex-servicemen, with or without any special skills, and professionals in various fields of expertise. What started as a routine trip home after his monthly training last summer turned into a life-saving situation for an Ohio Army Reservist. First Lt. (Ohio) Heidi Peterson, a registered nurse, pulled and rescued a victim from a burning vehicle on Nov. 14, 2021, on State Route 229, west of Mount Vernon.
"I've always believed in disrespecting the act," Peterson said. "I could not stand by and do nothing when human life was at stake."
On his way home from practice that Sunday night, Peterson saw an overturned car on fire and someone inside screaming for help. After stopping, he took action to rescue the person trapped inside. Peterson yelled to two bystanders to call 911 as he tried to save the man. While he was rescuing a man who was trapped inside a burning car, another bystander opened the door while pulling the victim out of the fire. After extricating the man from the vehicle and eventually getting him to safety, Peterson administered first aid to the victim's external injuries and kept him awake until 911 arrived.

"I never thought about it," Peterson said. "I hope other people understand that it's okay to help; it's okay to do something."
The Mount Vernon Fire Department honored Peterson for his actions. Fire Chief Chad Christopher presented Peterson with the Citizen's Cross at the Mount Vernon City Council meeting in January. The honor is given to members of the public who are not associated with the fire service and who distinguish themselves by performing actions or duties in a way that goes above and beyond what is required or expected, and that sets them apart from their peers.
"With great courage and urgency, (Peterson) and an unknown male extricated the driver from the vehicle to safety," Christopher said of Peterson. "(Peterson) also assisted in providing first aid to the injured driver ... (the quick action) to remove the driver from the vehicle was not only brave and heroic, but life-saving."
In addition to her duties within OHMR, Peterson holds a master's degree in nursing, is a registered nurse, and is a National Disaster Health Specialist. With those credentials, Peterson wanted to join the traditional military branches, but couldn't meet the age requirement. Still wanting to serve his fellow Ohioans, Peterson found a home with the 6th Medical Battalion, OHMR, and served during the government's COVID-19 response mission.

OHMR is one of three branches of the State Defense Force, along with the Ohio Naval Reserve and the Ohio Naval Militia. OHMR serves under the Governor and is an integral part of the Ohio Department of the Adjutant General. When called upon, they help support Ohio communities in roles that include disaster relief and medical assistance.
"(OHMR) is not well known, and what I think is really amazing about OHMR is that it will allow people to serve who have not been able to serve in another capacity or have served (the military) and still want to do something," Peterson said. "We have so much knowledge and so many wonderful people, and I'd like to see that grow." Size of this preview: 498 × 600 pixels.
